DOT-mandated drug testing services ensure safety-sensitive transportation and logistics workers comply with federal regulations like those outlined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Comprehensive programs cover the full spectrum of DOT requirements: pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.
Compliant Testing Modalities
- DOT Urine Testing: The DOT (Federal/Regulated ) (Urine) meets the drug testing requirements defined by the Department of Transportation (DOT) in rule 49 CFR Part 40. This test is specifically intended for employees in safety-sensitive positions regulated by the Department of Transportation. It will detect all regulated analytes at the cutoffs designated by the DOT, and will be conducted at a SAMHSA-certified laboratory.
- DOT Alcohol Testing: The DOT Breath Alcohol Test (BAT) determines a person’s blood alcohol concentration by measuring the amount of alcohol present in their exhaled breath.
- Pre-Employment Testing: Must be conducted and a negative result received before a safety-sensitive employee performs any safety-sensitive functions for the first time.
- Random Testing: Unannounced testing conducted throughout the year at specific minimum annual rates, selecting employees based on a scientifically valid random process.
- Post-Accident Testing: Required following qualifying accidents involving commercial motor vehicles if there is a fatality, or if the driver receives a citation and a vehicle had to be towed or someone required medical attention.
- Reasonable Suspicion Testing: Triggered when trained supervisors observe specific, contemporaneous, articulable appearances, behaviors, speech, or body odors indicating drug or alcohol use.
- Return-to-Duty Testing: Mandatory before an employee who has violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations can return to performing safety-sensitive duties, following a successful evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
- Follow Up Testing: Follow-up testing is conducted after an employee returns to work following a drug or alcohol policy violation. These unannounced tests help ensure ongoing compliance with workplace and regulatory requirements while promoting a safe and productive work environment. Available for both DOT and Non-DOT programs.
Non-DOT drug and alcohol tests are flexible, customizable screenings for general employment, personal, or legal purposes that do not adhere to federal DOT regulations. Because they are not bound by federal guidelines, employers and individuals have complete control over the testing panels, specimen types (urine, saliva, hair, or blood), and testing frequencies.
These screenings can be tailored to meet your exact business or personal requirements and are available for a variety of needs:
- Pre-Employment Screening: Conducted before a candidate is hired to ensure a drug-free work environment.
- Random Testing: Unannounced testing using a randomized selection process to deter ongoing substance use.
- Post-Accident Testing: Administered following a workplace incident or accident to determine if impairment was a contributing factor.
- Reasonable Suspicion: Triggered by observable signs or behaviors indicating an employee may be under the influence on the job.
- Return-to-Duty: Required before an employee can resume safety-sensitive tasks following a previous policy violation.
- Follow-up Testing: Scheduled periodically for an employee who has undergone rehabilitation to ensure ongoing compliance.
