Early gender detection is possible as early as 6 weeks into pregnancy through non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) blood tests, which check for fetal DNA in the mother’s blood with over 99% accuracy. These tests (e.g., SneakPeek) look for Y chromosomes, which, if found, indicate a boy, while their absence indicates a girl. 

Key Early Gender Methods:
    • Early Gender Blood Test (6-7 weeks): These tests analyze cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) from a small sample of the mother’s blood. Results are often available within 1–5 business days.
    • Ultrasound (13-16 weeks+): While early scans can be done around 13 weeks for fun, reliable ultrasound gender identification is usually more accurate around 16–20 weeks.
    • Old Wives’ Tales: Non-scientific methods like monitoring cravings or belly shape have no proven accuracy and are only for fun.

Important Considerations:
    • Accuracy: While high, 99% accuracy means a 1 in 100 chance of an incorrect result.
    • Contamination: When performing at-home tests, male DNA contamination can cause false results; strict adherence to instructions is essential.
    • Cost: These tests are typically not covered by insurance and can range in price (e.g., $149+). 

Other Options:
  • NIPT/NIPS (9-10 weeks): Clinical-grade Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing can determine sex alongside genetic screening.
  • CVS/Amniocentesis: These diagnostic tests can determine gender with nearly 100% accuracy but are usually reserved for high-risk pregnancies due to small risks.
